Cupping or “ba guan” in Mandarin, a traditional Chinese therapy, recently caught people’s attention as a result of the red marks that dotted Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps in Rio 2016. The therapy can help with pain, inflammation and blood flow, as well as driving away cold as swimmers spend a good amount of time under water. However, the treatment is not recommended for everyone – children and pregnant women are advised against undergoing cupping. Have a look at the process as medical practitioners attach suction cups to patients’ skin.
